Wanted: Effective Servant Leaders
Wanted: Dead and Alive. No, they are not wanted for their criminal activities. They are being earnestly sought as they are dead to self but alive to God. Servant leaders are in high demand, more so if they are effective. For these ones can make or break any entity – be it a church or NGO – as they influence and inspire people’s thinking and behaviour. In this issue we have lined up for you a potpourri of articles on the theme of LEADERSHIP: The Marks of a Leader gleans precious lessons on leadership from Nehemiah’s life. At The Externally Focused Church Conference, leaders network and share on how to become the best church for the community. Though he left his thriving medical practice to become a pastor, Dr Chew Weng Chee proves that he is No Man’s Fool. In Integrity and Charity, we see Tan Sri Robert Phang’s tough stance against injustice in contrast to his soft spot for the poor. Dr Paul Ai relates how God’s amazing power transformed him From Witchdoctor to Minister. Fired up after a dramatic encounter with God, Pastor Kul Bal now sees himself as a “revivalist”, turning people back to God. What gives mentor and trainer Doug Carter great joy is Empowering Leaders. Tom Atema, the Leader in Blue Jeans, has this one mission in life – helping ordinary people awaken to their potential as leaders. Passing the Baton explains why leadership succession planning is an issue we cannot afford to ignore. As leaders at home, some fathers appear stern and unapproachable. However, Making Music Together, a heartwarming story of father-and-son collaboration, dispels that image. For a church or Christian organisation to succeed, three M’s are needed: men, methods and the move of the Holy Spirit. Men are the mature leaders, whereas methods comprise management skills and principles of leadership. But beyond what the management and leadership gurus have to offer, we need to depend on the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit. While men and methods do have a place, we need to remember that God accomplishes His purposes not by might nor by power, but by His Spirit (Zechariah 4:6).
